However, we have a fish. He's a good fish, but I think maybe he's cold. I caught myself thinking something dangerous earlier today. I thought, "Ya know, I'm not sure that a fish is worth us paying for the heat to stay on while we are away from our apartment." Let me tell you why that thought is dangerous. You see, when I was in junior high, my family decided to move. We had a cockatiel at that time, and we weren't sure where we were going to put her in the new house. I made a joking comment that it might just be better if she died. Unfortunately, my comment came true and I was the one who found the poor dead bird at the bottom of her cage. I was horrified. So now you can see why I'm concerned about the thought I had earlier.
You may be thinking, "He's just a fish. No big deal." Let me personalize him for you. His name is Tiki, which is short for Tiki-Tiki-Tembo-No-Sar-Rembo-Charry-Barry-Rouchie-Pip-Berry-Pembo. He's kind of a spaz, but he often follows my finger. He gets really excited when I come up to the bowl and swims around furiously. Well, at least he used to. Now he sits at the bottom of the bowl and doesn't do much swimming. I think he's cold.
So now that you know the background, what should I do? Do I sacrifice the heat for the fish? Do I stop thinking bad thoughts because it might jinx things and I might end up horrified again, finding a dead fish at the top of the bowl?
Thoughts?

You're a goofball. A great big ball of goof. I think you should just wait for a bit. Wait until we get a heating bill and we see how things are going. Then maybe we turn the heat down or off when we're gone and see what happens to Mr. Fishy (I mean Tiki).
After much deliberation, we here in California think the heating bill should come before the fish. But we won't judge you if you put Tiki first. That bird story is pretty traumatic.
P.S. My word verification is farefr. I think it needs one more vowel...
Sharon here! I have a couple of thoughts. I wonder if you set the fishbowl on a heating pad and turn it on low, it would warm the water up a bit. But I wouldn't leave it on forever - just maybe an hour at a time here and there. What do you think? I hope Tiki warms up and gets to feeling better soon!!
Here is advice from someone whose cat is currently sitting alone in an apartment barely about 50 - I'd keep it cool. If the fish seems to be struggling, you could always put a desk lamp over him and that might warm him up a little. I don't keep it as cold as I did pre-baby, but even with Gabriel it's pretty chilly. Too bad you can't put a hoodie on a fish. :)
